İstanbul, 2016

Sound topography is located between an attractive old neighbourhood and a central green area of İstanbul. Located in the university area, sound topography offers mixed-used spaces for the students of music faculty. Adding to that, sound topography aims to open up the university campus to the neighbourhood people, create common spaces which people can encounter with the creative production of students of the conservatory. Following the square on the neighbourhood side, the corridor and attached inner courtyards provide joyful spaces for new encounters. The creative production meets with the public on the open amphitheatre, park and professional auditorium on the Bosphorus side of the campus.

The design concept is inspired by the working principle of musical instruments. Voids of instruments provide unique space for creating sound from the air. Sound topography forms like giant musical instruments in a performative place. The structural system aims to deconstruct the common image of schools in Turkey whose architecture is influenced by modernist ideals and forms and mainly built with concrete by using similar materials in different styles.
