Loafer Cinema; is a common space project designed for public spheres of Istanbul. In the presented scenario, Loafer Cinema is located at Taksim Square in 2014. One year after the Gezi Protest, the square and Gezi Park were criminalized and became lifeless by the decisions of authorities. In the face of this situation, Loafer Cinema settles in between Park and Square. Its movable open structure aims to re-connect the park and square again with city dwellers by offering space for activities.

During the design process, we asked the question “Is it possible to imagine a portable common space as an architectural representation of a flâneur wandering around the city?” While looking for an answer, we established design research combining fiction characters from literature and architectural design techniques. Flâneurs from well-known fiction books became references for the design.

The “Loafer Cinema” design; opens a common space for city dwellers. On the street level, there are playful puffs both for the climb up or just a quick sit.  Wide-range of encounters can happen around a sitting topography of space which is formed by plates. Collecting memories and stories is part of the daily routine of “Loafer Cinema”. Also, this place is a storyteller.  memories about the city can be shown to people by screens before they forget.

Its completely removable, changeable and transportable structure is open for different scenarios such as film screenings, flea markets, concerts or space for sitting and passing by. The Loafer Cinema offers the possibility of being installed in different public spaces of the city. The partial plan scheme can be adapted for the city, re-installed depending on the program of the public sphere.

An Integral structural system creates strength and stability on the common concrete ground of squares in Istanbul.  Initially, there is a pedestal that is sitting on the street level gently. The permeable structural system rise on a pedestal on the ground. The system creates voids in which seating, walking and climbing units can be placed. Every piece of space; puff, plates, mesh and screen can be attached to the structure by the users.
